Camille, Doctor of Pharmacy
College Attended: Davidson College (undergrad), University of Houston College of Pharmacy (grad)
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by the example of my grandfather, who taught me the value of education and perseverance. His encouragement to keep learning—no matter the challenge—has shaped my commitment to life-long growth and to serving patients with empathy and excellence.
Tell me about your job. What attracted you to this career?
I am a pharmacy resident at Harris Health, training to become an oncology clinical pharmacist. I was drawn to this career because it combines science, direct patient care, and the opportunity to reduce health disparities. I love working at the intersection of complex cancer therapies and compassionate, team-based care.
What obstacles did you overcome to get to this point in your career?
Moving from North Carolina to Houston, Texas for pharmacy school meant starting over without an established support network. Balancing a rigorous professional program with the pressures of relocation and research projects demanded resilience and careful time management. These experiences strengthened my adaptability and determination to succeed.
How does a person progress in your field?
Progression in pharmacy often starts with completion of a PharmD degree and postgraduate training such as residencies and fellowships. Advancement can include board certification, specialization (like oncology), leadership roles, research, and precepting future pharmacists. Continuous professional development and staying current with evolving guidelines are key.
Do you have any advice you would like to give future and current college students?
Seek mentors early and often—they can guide your academic and professional choices. Be open to opportunities outside your comfort zone, whether research, leadership, or service projects. Finally, protect your well-being; sustainable success comes from balancing ambition with self-care.
